February 2-3, Calforex Cup #4, Camrose
We didn't get much time to rest after the races in Edmonton as Calforex Cup #4 event took place the following weekend in Camrose. Great snow and weather conditions in Camrose this year definitely made the racing a whole lot more fun for the athletes.
Individual competition opened the race weekend with Dev.1 Boys taking the start first. Finn missed 4 shots in this event which was penalized by 45 seconds for each missed target but still managed to finish 4th showing some impressive ski speed along the way. Kieran raced in his first Indiviual event ever and after missing a total of 5 shots finished mid-pack with very solid skiing time.
India was the winner in the Dev.2 Girls category with Gillian placing second. Both girls had their share of troubles on the shooting range today but their strong skiing allowed them to finish ahead of their competition.
CBR's Dev.2 Boys recovered beautifully from the challenging races in Edmonton and pretty much dominated the field with all 5 of our boys finishing in top 6. Brett Pennington took care of business on the shooting range posting the best score in the category and winning his second Gold medal of the season. Jerome Gobeil had a fast pace today finishing in 3rd place. Chad, Gavin and Adam finished 4,5 and 6 respectively. Simply outstanding job boys!
This long race on a very tough course provided a big challenge for Ashley in the Sr. Girls category who raced the same distance as Sr. Boys. Her ski speed was impressive, but 1 minute penalty for each missed shot turned out to be the difference as Ashley had to settle for 10th place.
Ben Churchill continued his assault of the podium in the Senior boys category winning 3rd consecutive race. Sergey stopped 20 seconds away from finishing on the podium, while Jakob posted the fastest ski time that allowed him to make up some time to finish in 5th place. Connor and Wesley put in a strong effort but the shooting troubles prevented them from finishing higher in the final standings.
Sprint was the race format on Sunday and our Dev.1 Boys have once again missed the podium by a small margin with Finn finishing 4th and Kieran placing respectable 14th in a field of more than 30 athletes.
Chad Berling had a good battle with Mark Singleton of Edmonton Nordic for 1st in Dev.2 Boys category but couldn't quite overcome the 20 sec gap and finished 2nd. Gavin Culver was the only other CBR athlete to crack top 5 in this race. Shooting was the problem for Brett, Jerome and Adam as they placed 7,8 and 9 respectively.
India raced to her second Gold medal of the weekend missing only 2 targets in Dev.2 Girls category while Gillian captured Silver.
Sergey Bochkarnikov was the lone CBR representative on the podium today in the Senior Boys category placing 2nd while posting the best shooting score in the field. Ben and Jakob finished 5th and 6th respectively with Jakob continuing to display a torrid pace on skis. Wesley Munro delivered a very strong performance shooting clean in prone and finishing 8th. Connor struggled with shooting today which prevented him from cracking the top 10.
Ashley gave it all in the individual race on Saturday but still managed to put up a good fight in the Sr. Girls category. 5 penalty loops however were too much to overcome in this short race. Great effort nonetheless Ashley!
We have a little bit of a break now between the races and we will soon be starting our preparations for the Western Canadian Championship in North Battleford, SK. Thank you Camrose for a great race weekend.
